Ireland’s rate of employment for disabled people is at 32.6% with an even lower rate at 17% for people with intellectual disabilities. People with disabilities consistently encounter barriers to employment among them inaccessible recruitment practices, negative assumptions and multiple environmental challenges. Including people with disabilities into the workplace brings advantages in abundance including diverse viewpoints, enhanced employee loyalty, wider customer based, enhanced company reputation and compliance with legal obligations. The purpose of this training is to provide employers with an understanding and appreciation of the issues regarding disability, particularly as it impacts on the participation of people with disabilities in the workforce.
1. Become aware of the relevant anti-discrimination and equal opportunities
legislation that exists in Ireland.
2. Have an understanding of general and specific information on disabilities and abilities, focusing on mobility issues and sensory issues (blindness, deafness, etc.).
3. Be aware of and challenge common myths and misconceptions and biases
about disabilities.
4. Have an awareness of disability etiquette including appropriate language and behaviour.
5. Understand the importance of reasonable accommodations in the workplace.
6. Understand discrimination on the basis of disability.
7. Have an understanding of mental health issues in the workplace.
8. Be able to create inclusive and accessible recruitment opportunities.
Each participant will be provided with a student workbook and all slides.
