Training in self-advocacy and empowerment for diverse groups is essential for nurturing belonging, inclusivity, equity, and personal development. This training program equips individuals with the skills and confidence to voice their wishes, values and beliefs make informed decisions, and advocate for their rights. By focusing on these components and strategies, self-advocacy and empowerment training can effectively support diverse groups in developing the skills they need to advocate for themselves and others and build capacity and confidence to represent and advocate their interests and contribute to pertinent decision-making processes. The training uses materials and examples which reflect the diversity of the participants using inclusive and accessible language and encourages peer support and group discussion while creating a safe space for sharing experiences and challenges. This training can be designed to support self-advocacy and empowerment in the five key factors of integration identified by national and international integration frameworks including employment, education, access to services, political participation and the building of social connections.
1. Understand the concept of self-advocacy and empowerment.
2. Have the skills to advocate effectively for themselves and others across
multiple settings (employment, education, access to services, political participation and the building of social connections).
3. Be aware of international treaties and legislation that underpins their rights
and responsibilities.
4. Understand how Irish law promotes equality and protects from discrimination, harassment and victimisation for nine specific protected characteristics.
5. Build self-awareness by identifying personal strengths, weaknesses, values, and goals.
6. Have strategies for effective and assertive communication and handling
conflict.
7. Recognise how to access and navigate relevant services and supports,
navigate services.
8.Work with community leaders to develop opportunities in every aspect of
community life, such as cultural, employment, education, religious, civic, etc.
9.Identify strengths and assets within their community to working collaboration with.
10.Explore the unique challenges faced by different cultural, ethnic, and socio-economic groups and how those challenges have successfully been addressed.
